Scouts December 2008

This month has been a festive month for Boy Scouts. We had our first meeting on December 2nd. We used that time to plan our skit for the Pack Christmas party. As I read through our Webelos handbook, I realized that if we did a sock puppet skit, it would accomplish about half of the activities we needed to do to get the Showman pin. So, at our second meeting on the 9th, we made sock puppets. They turned out great! We also worked on our Traveler requirements. This involved looking at maps, finding two different routs to a destination and figuring the milage. I think my head was spinning after all this. The boys thought it was great and had a fun time with all these activities.
Our Pack meeting was held on December 16th. Again, there were lots of advancement awards given. Then we received our prizes for popcorn sales. Each boy in our den not only received their prize, but a giant Hershey's chocolate bar because we were the only den to have 100% participation in popcorn sales. By the way, popcorn purchases are the easiest way to support Boy Scouts. You can either buy some for yourself, or buy some to send overseas to our men and women in the Military. We finished the evening with each den putting on their skits and eating lots of sweets brought by the parents. Its so great to not only invest in the future of America, but to get to have fun doing it!

Pageant Pictures

Today I picked up my pageant photos from Megan at Graphique Fine Arts Photography. She does such amazing work! She makes a session so fun. Leslie of Leslie's Arts did my make-up and hair. She made me feel a good as I looked. Her advice on health and beauty is included in her fee. She is a special lady, too. Thank you both so much for making my pictures look incredible!

Scouts, November 16-30,2008

Scouts, November 16-30,2008
Last week was our Pack meeting. This is a monthly get-to-gether for all the boys and their families. We started the evening with an award ceremony. All the boys in my den received at least one pin for an achievement they had completed. Then we were treated to a show by a magician. The boys were captivated by all the tricks. He even pulled a real rabbit out of a box at the end.Durring Thanksgiving week, our Pack took toys and books to the Children's Hospital here in Denver. We collected these items at our Pack meeting for Good Turn Week. This is a nation wide event held once a year to give back to our local community by doing a service project. We were given a tour of the first floor by Kathleen McBride. I think the boys liked the ball sculpture the most. We finished the day with icecream. Wow, what a fun day!

Boy Scout Activities Week of 11/8/08-11/16/08

This past week has been very busy with Scouting for me. I spent Saturday at Scout training. As a leader, I must keep up with the training offered by the Scouts.
Our Den meeting on Tuesday night was to finish the Citizen badge. We had a local Judge speak to us. He was able to help the boys undersand better what they can do to be good citizens. We had fun standing on one leg to tell about another boy we think is a good citizen.
On Wednesday, we visited a new office space that was under construction. The architect and the general contractor told us about the changes they were making to the space. The boys were told they could keep any leftover construction material they could find. Who knew that old pieces of copper and screws could be such treasures.
On Thursday, I presented an addiction awareness program to the fine young men of Boy Scout Troop 794. We started with a relay race wearing heavy back packs to demonstrate how much more difficult life can be with an addiction. We then discussed the 5 stages of addiction and the boys did skits based on these stages. There was a lot of laughter, but I think they got the point. We ended the presentation with various ways to deal with stress so the boys would be better able to deal with life in the hopes they would not need to fall into addictive behaviors.
What a fun week we have had in Boy Scouts. This has been a smart investment for the future of America!
